My grandfather smoked his whole life.
제 할아버지는 평생 담배를 피우셨습니다.
I was almost 10 years old when my mother said to him,
제가 10살 쯤 될 무렵, 제 어머니가 할아버지께 말씀하셨죠.
"If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you need to stop immediately".
"만약 손주들이 졸업 하는 것을 보고 싶다면, 지금 당장 담배를 끊으세요".
Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized exactly what was at stake.
흡연을 함으로서 잃는 대가를 그때서야 깨달으신 할아버지의 눈에 눈물이 차 올랐습니다.
He quit cold - turkey that very day.
그 날 당장 할아버지는 담배를 완전히 끊으셨습니다.
Three years later he died of lung cancer.
그 날로부터 3년 뒤, 할아버지는 폐암으로 돌아가셨어요.
We were very close, and his death destroyed me.
저와 할아버지는 굉장히 가까웠고, 그의 죽음은 저를 망가뜨렸습니다.
My mother said to me,
어머니가 제게 말했죠
"Please never smoke. Don't put your family through what your grandfather put us through".
"제발 담배만은 피우지 말아라. 네 할아버지가 우리 가족에게 한 짓을 똑같이 되풀이 하지 말아다오".
I agreed.
